Due to hardship issues sweet 1 yr Cratos was surrendered by his owner along with another dog- Lady. Sadly, Lady was euthanized the other day and now Cratos is in danger of being put down as well. The owner said he loves all people and other dogs and he rated a "NO CONCERN" on his behavior test. This young pup is so easy to handle and sweet with other dogs and he's SO SMALL - he only weighs 36 pounds!!!!

We think he would be fine with older children because he is still young and does have puppy energy still ... but unfortunately we don't know how he is with cats.

Nikko, a 1.5 yr old male pit bull, was found as a stray and brought to the shelter. Nikko has a very noble and handsome face and although his head looks huge in the photo below, he's not a big guy at all...he's only 42 lbs!...but does need some obedience training as he pulls on the leash and doesn't know basic commands, such as sit or stay so he will need a willing and strong Human Pack Leader to give him the exercise & discipline he will need to be a well mannered and obedient companion... but he's well worth the effort as he's very friendly with people and he was calm around other dogs. This dog is something special--the kind that changes a life. A shelter staff member at SI ACC knew that and asked for our help.

Sweet LUCILLE, hit by car and abandoned! Surgery done, needs foster!

IOHR has committed to taking little Lucille (2 yrs, 50 lbs) if someone out there can FOSTER OR ADOPT this exceptionally sweet special needs pup!

Lucille is a "lucky dog"--she survived quite an ordeal, hit by a car and left to die with a broken leg. Had she been nearly ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY, she would have languished in pain in a cage, or euthanized immediately.

But Lucille was in NYC, where we are lucky to have the services and resources we do (trust me!). A kind shelter volunteer advocated so strongly for her, that this rescuer could not ignore her pleas -- nor could the Mayor's Alliance of NYC, who have generously offered to sponsor her care.

Lucille is exceptionally sweet, which is why the Alliance will spend literally thousands to save her. Today, she underwent a bone fusion, which saved her leg, though she will walk strangely, not being able to bend it. Sweet Lucille won't care about that-- she's happy to bury her head in your lap and nuzzle your hands-- she'd gladly give up some mobility-- just to have a home of her own.

The shelter staff write of Lucille:

Lucille came to us by our DOH vet that nursed the dog back to health. Lucielle was hit by a car and brought to an SI vet by good samaritans who were supposed to adopt the dog. They never came back.

The vet had the dog for a few months and fixed what he could for her back right leg. She walks with a limp and there is a good chance she will need surgery or her leg amputated. She is one of the nicest dogs and has no dog aggression and doesn't react to cats at all! She was left here and can't be placed in adoptions because of her condition.

Lucille was saved from euthanasia a few days ago by IOHR. She will KEEP HER LEG, but it will not bend like it should. She will be prepared to leave the hospital in a few days, and we are DESPERATE to find a kind, caring and nurturing foster to help her recover! No special skills are required-- just the ability to love-- (and an elevator might be nice).

Sweet Missy is the kind of dog you want to cuddle up with. This small(44 lbs) 2 yr old hound/pit X arrived at the Shelter as a stray. She loves being caressed and petted, and loves treats, ah, perhaps a bit too much. She needs to put on some weight. She arrived here very thin and underweight and pregnant but the shelter spayed her and aborted her puppies because there are just to many unwanted dogs already being dumped out there...why add to the numbers. Clearly, life had been hard to her. She wants to gobble up treats and needs to learn to take them gently from your hands. She walks nicely on a leash, and has learned "sit" when tasty treat is her reward. She's been fine around the other dogs she's met at the Shelter.

Flex lost his home on 11/29/08 when his owner surrendered him. She told the Shelter that Flex had been a gift, that he loves men, women, and children, is housetrained and obedient. MARCO is a gorgeous 2 yr M Brindle Australian Kelpie mix who was found as a stray. He's medium sized at 54 lbs. He's strong and a little shy and aloof... but that may be due to his stress at finding himself at the shelter. Once you get to know him, you see that he is oh so friendly: never ever aggressive. He does pull some on the leash and jumps at times but nothing that a little training won't fix. He's very smart and eager to please as most Kelpies are. He certainly appears to be housetrained. He's been fine around people and dogs. Unfortunately we don't know how he is with kids or cats but we do know that he will be a loyal companion for whomever takes the time to bring him out of his shell... he is quite a catch!!!

SAVE TINY POLO!

With the most adorable ears on the planet, Polo romps and plays like a child--- be cause he *is* a child. At only 4 mos old, and 22 lbs, Polo finds himself on the rough streets, and then taken in to "prison." Little ones like him don't do well here-- the exposure to disease can be devastating.

IOHR wants to get this one out as soon as possible. He is sweet and adorable, loves to be held and petted and appears to be good with other dogs at the shelter. As a puppy, we'd rather not place him with children under 7, as puppies are naturally rambunctious. Ideally, we'd like to find him an active family, maybe with another dog for him to play with. He will grow more, so please be prepared for a 45 - 50 lb dog!

Polo will come neutered, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm tested and utd on all vaccinations that can be given for his age. A small adoption donation to the rescue will be required.

An awful truth is that Dora is a throwaway mom. Though this smallish American Pit Bull Terrier mix is only 3 years old, her previous owner quite likely decided that her producing puppies wasn't profitable enough -- it didn't more than pay for her upkeep -- and put her on the street. But more than a pup machine, Dora has a lovely personality. She's friendly with people and calm even when other dogs bark at her. Already she's a mature dog. During her photo shoot, she sat calmly even though she didn't like the bright lights flashing in her eyes. She is a perfect apartment size, only 39 lb. She won't know another home or a life beyond tomorrow unless some kind person saves her.

It would be a shame to lose this girl.

DAVIE must have learned some things in his last home as he did his business outside. He is great with people of all sizes and is good with other dogs. Unfortunately we don't know how he is with cats. This pretty boy loved to ham it up in his pictures and will be a wonderful companion for many years to come. He scored STRAIGHT A's on his behavior test and earned the highest rating of "NO CONCERN."

SAMPSON is a 2.5 yr old 74 lb mushmellow! He was surrendered by his owner due to hardship issues. What a GORGEOUS boy he is with that unique bluenose and blue and white coat. Most likely he is a combo of AmStaff and AmBulldog. He is a favorite of the Kennel workers who can't understand why he hasn't been adopted because he's such a sweetheart. SAMPSON passed his behavior test with flying colors and got the highest rating of "No Concern". He is good with other dogs. Because of his size, he's probably best to go with children older than 7 yrs old. He appears to be housebroken and knows basic commands.

All Bully Breeds will need daily exercise and discipline so he will need an owner who understands this and is willing to put the time in to give him what he needs. Ten month old Riley is scared. TONIGHT IS HER LAST NIGHT unless YOU CAN SAVE her by Adopting, Fostering or Sponsoring her so she gets a SECOND CHANCE.

Riley's owner surrendered her just 3 days ago, explaining that she couldn't afford to keep a dog. She said that Riley was a gift and housetrained. We wonder what the "Life of Riley" was like. But she's here now, and safe. When you first take her out, she is very shy and walks with her tail tucked between her legs. Yet, she welcomes visitors at her kennel door and says she wants to go out. She is fine on the leash but at times, hides under her caretaker's legs or behind the bench where this volunteer was sitting.

I carried her - she weighs only 34 pounds!!! - massaged her, played tag with her and never did she exhibit any sign of aggression. She is quite thin, but she takes treats gently from your hands. She met other dogs and seemed to enjoy those encounters despite her fears. She's a GORGEOUS puppy with amazing copper eyes and she's just going to be a BEAUTY OF A DOG someday provided she LIVES to see that day!!

PAULIE, a 3 yr Amstaff/Pit, had the bad luck to be born with a dark brindle coat and to arrive to the shelter right before the Thanksgiving Holiday. He has no handling issues, and even with his BIG lovely head, is so calm, cool and collected. All the kennel workers were immediately struck by his \calm and sweet nature: great with people and with other dogs. Even though he weighs 55 pounds, he is easy to lead on a leash, and takes treats gently from your hand. He loves being caressed. And he's content to sit by your side. What a wuggie!! We think because of his calm temperament, he would be fine with children 7 yrs+. Unfortunately we don't know how he is with cats. - COME AND MEET HIM TODAY!!!
